Baby showers have been around a long time now, and are an established tradition. However, that does not mean that everyone has lots of ideas of what to expect at a shower, and furthermore what they should buy as a baby shower gift. After all, not everyone has been to a baby shower before; in fact, if you are still quite young, you may not be close to anyone who has had a baby, so everything about babies is mystical to you.
So, you have found out that baby showers are a celebratory gathering at which friends and relatives of a pregnant woman get together to hand over their baby gifts. Now, the next thing is, what on earth do I buy as a baby shower gift?
What To Buy As A Baby Shower Gift
When you are choosing a baby shower gift, it is best to consult with others who are going to the shower so that there is not too much repetition on the choice of gift. It is also not a bad idea to chat with the mother-to-be to see what it is that she is likely to need the most; that is, unless it is a surprise baby shower.
Choosing a baby shower gift is very different from choosing a gift for a birthday or any other occasion. Firstly, although it is aimed at one person, the mother-to-be, it is really for the benefit of another, the baby. Secondly, the range of options, at least for the type of gift, is limited to....well, baby things. A baby, as yet unborn, does not have hobbies, interests and tastes which help you make a selection.
That said, there is a wide range of baby shower gift choices available these days. It is a large market, therefore the gifts have emerged that target that market; or rather, the packaging has emerged to meet the market demand.
When deciding what to buy for the baby, always bear in mind that baby showers have evolved out of practical need; to help mothers-to-be, first timers especially, get fully prepared for the baby's arrival, with everything they need. having a baby, and bringing them up, is very expensive, and the initial costs bear much of the emphasis. So, it is fine with a baby shower gift to worry less about appearance, prettiness etc, and more on practicality. A van full of diapers may not seem very exciting, but they sure will come in handy!
Having said that, it is quite easy to choose something that combines practicality with attractiveness. While the mother-to-be may be content with buying as much second hand as possible, it is nice for baby shower goers to contribute something new in the way of clothing. If you do now know the sex of the baby, then it is easy to find good looking clothes in neutral colours; greens, yellows, white and so on.
When choosing baby clothes, it may be wise not to focus entirely on newborn size. If everyone at the shower does the same, then there could be a surplus, as babies do outgrow that size quickly, especially if they are born a hefty weight in the first place.
Why not put together a complete baby layette? That will not only provide some suitable gift items, but will save mum a bit of time putting it together herself. present it all in a nice bag, and hey presto! A super baby shower gift.
What about major items? If you are a close relative such as future grandparent, you may wish to help out in a substantial way. Baby cribs and buggies, for example, are very expensive, and to a young couple may seem daunting. Buying such a large item, though, will require some liaison with mum before hand, and if you plan to present it at the shower, be prepared to help her get it back home! Also, maybe a small complimentary gift to open at the baby shower would be a nice gesture, such as a bedding set to go with the crib.
If you want something presented nicely for mum at the baby shower, then baby gift baskets are easy to obtain these days and can be particularly attractive. Or, of course, you can choose your gift and have it "professionally" wrapped if you are not so good at things like that yourself.
Don't worry too much about presentation, though, it is in the practical use of the gifts when the baby is born that makes baby shower gifts memorable to the recipient. However you wrap a van full of diapers, it is when the new mum comes to use them she will recall the gesture!
